Auto Brake Master Cylinder
The brake master cylinder is a vital component in a vehicle's braking system, responsible for converting the force of the brake pedal into hydraulic pressure that activates the brake calipers. Without a properly functioning brake master cylinder, a vehicle's braking power and responsiveness can be significantly reduced, putting the safety of the driver and passengers at risk.

Auto Brake Wheel Cylinder
A brake wheel cylinder is part of the braking system for vehicles with drum brakes. They are often replaced with the car's brake shoes and always in pairs i.e. both sides. The brake wheel cylinder is activated by hydraulic brake fluid which forces the brake shoes against the drum when the brakes are applied.

Clutch Master Cylinder
The clutch master cylinder, or clutch pump is the main type of hydraulic clutch operating system. This simple hydraulic principle is used to transmit the required force from the clutch pedal to the slave cylinder. This part of the clutch system is connected on one side to the clutch pedal via a lever mechanism. The other end is connected via a hose to the slave cylinder, which moves the clutch.

Types of Auto Brake Master Cylinder

Single reservoir: One reservoir is used to supply both the front and rear brakes with a specified amount of fluid. When a failure happens, pressure on all four brakes can be disrupted, leading to massive loss.

Dual reservoir: The dual reservoir or dual circuit master cylinder feeds the front and rear brakes separately. One reservoir section supplies fluid to the front brakes, while the other goes to the rear. This fluid is provided through separate brake lines. If one section of the braking system fails, it shouldn't affect both the front and rear brakes with this design.

Components Of Auto Brake Master Cylinder

Reservoir

The master cylinder contains a reservoir filled with brake fluid. This reservoir ensures a constant fluid supply to the master cylinder and compensates for fluid displacement when the brakes are applied.

Primary Piston

The primary piston is actuated by the brake pedal. When the pedal is pressed, the primary piston moves forward, displacing brake fluid and creating pressure in the brake lines.

Secondary Piston

In dual-circuit master cylinders, a secondary piston operates independently of the primary piston. This design provides redundancy and ensures braking functionality even if one circuit fails.

Seals and Gaskets

The master cylinder contains seals and gaskets to prevent brake fluid leaks and maintain hydraulic pressure. Over time, these seals may wear out and require replacement to prevent fluid loss and brake system failure.

Basic Principles of Auto Brake Master Cylinder

When you press down on the brake pedal, a pushrod activates the pistons in the master cylinder, which is filled with brake fluid from the reservoir. As the pistons move and their corresponding springs compress, pressure is created inside the master cylinder. Since brake fluid is virtually incompressible, the pressure from the pistons forces the fluid into the brake lines. This is known as hydraulic pressure.

From there, the brake fluid travels to the brake units at each wheel. In the case of disc brakes, the pressurized fluid enters a brake caliper and causes brake pads to rub against a rotor and slow down the wheel. For drum brakes, the same effect is created when the fluid pushes a set of drum shoes against a wheel drum.

Common Symptoms of a Failing Auto Brake Master Cylinder

Reduced braking power or responsiveness

If the brake master cylinder is not functioning correctly, the brake calipers may not receive enough pressure to activate fully, resulting in reduced braking power and responsiveness.

01

Spongy or mushy brake pedal

A spongy or mushy brake pedal can indicate air in the brake lines, which a leaking brake master cylinder can cause.

02

Leaking brake fluid

A leak in the brake master cylinder can cause brake fluid to leak out, resulting in a low brake fluid level and reduced braking power.

03

Warning lights or messages on the dashboard

Some vehicles have sensors that can detect a malfunctioning brake master cylinder, triggering a warning light or message on the dashboard.

04

Grinding noise when braking

A failing brake master cylinder may not be able to provide enough pressure to the brake calipers. Hence, the brake pads may not be able to retract fully. This can cause the brake pads to grind against the rotor, resulting in a grinding noise when braking.

Importance of Auto Brake Wheel Cylinder

• When you step on the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure is amplified and then transmitted through the brake lines to each wheel, brake calipers in the front and auto brake wheel cylinder in the rear, at least for vehicles built with rear drum brakes.

• The auto brake wheel cylinders convert that hydraulic brake pressure into movement, tiny pistons expanding and pushing the brake shoes into the brake drum. Moved by the auto brake wheel cylinders, the brake shoes can only expand so far, forcing the friction material into the drums to slow and stop their movement, and therefore, the movement of the wheels attached to them.

• Because the auto brake wheel cylinders are hidden inside the brake drums, they're well-protected, but any failure would also be hidden. Auto brake wheel cylinders are not prone to failure, but they can leak brake fluid if their seals fail. If brake fluid leaks from one of the auto brake wheel cylinders, it would most likely contaminate the friction surfaces of the brake shoes, ruining them and severely reducing braking efficiency.

• While auto brake wheel cylinders do not account for much braking, usually around 30%, they do much for the stability of your vehicle while driving and braking in many situations. Poor rear braking could cause problems with front brakes, as well, forcing them to take more of the braking load, >90% instead of 70% for example, leading to overheating, brake fade, and possible warping.

Auto Brake Wheel Cylinder Components

The auto brake wheel cylinder is a hydraulic part connected to the drum brake system. It is also a rear axle component attached to the brake shoe. Braking is activated by a piston which pushes the brake shoe against the drum and stops the car. The movement of the piston is caused by the hydraulic pressure of the brake fluid and the actuation of the brake pedal.

Basic Principles of Auto Brake Wheel Cylinder

When you depress the brake pedal, the force generated by your foot transfers to the brake master cylinder.

The master cylinder then converts this force into hydraulic pressure, which is carried by brake fluid through a brake line to each wheel cylinder.

This pressurized brake fluid in the wheel cylinder then pushes the cylinder pistons outwards, pressing each brake shoe against the rotating brake drum, stopping the wheel.

When the brake pedal is released, return springs pull the brake shoes away from the brake drum, pushing the wheel cylinder pistons back into their bore.

Auto Brake Wheel Cylinder Tips

Check for leaks: Inspect your auto brake wheel cylinders regularly for any signs of leaks, such as wet spots or dripping brake fluid.

Brake fluid flush: Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for brake fluid flush intervals to prevent corrosion and maintain hydraulic pressure.

Inspect brake shoes: Check your brake shoes for wear and replace them if necessary to prevent damage to the auto brake wheel cylinders.

Clean the brake assembly: Periodically clean the brake assembly to remove debris and prevent corrosion, which can affect the auto brake wheel cylinder's performance.

FAQ

Q: How do auto brake wheel cylinders work?

A: Auto brake wheel cylinders are filled with brake fluid and connected to the brake master cylinder using high-pressure brake lines. For your brakes to work properly, the brake fluid needs to be clean, and the cylinders need to hold brake fluid regardless of the pressure in the lines.

Q: Are you restricted to plain packaging?

A: No, we offer branded options and can follow customer packing instructions.

Q: What's your policy on unwanted products?

A: With pre-shipment verification and samples provided, we don't accept returns without quality justification.

Q: What does the auto brake master cylinder do?

A: The brake master cylinder converts the force from the brake pedal into hydraulic pressure. It then activates the brakes to slow down or stop the car.

Q: What causes auto brake master cylinder failure?

A: Master cylinder failure can be caused by internal seal wear or corrosion, leading to brake fluid leaks and loss of hydraulic pressure.
