Components of Clutch Master Cylinder
Hydraulic Cylinder
The main body of the master cylinder that houses the piston. This is where the pressure conversion from mechanical to hydraulic happens.
Piston and Pushrod
The pushrod pushes the piston inside the cylinder when you depress the clutch pedal—the piston forces hydraulic fluid into the system, which then creates the desired pressure.
Seals and Gaskets
Seals are used to prevent any fluid leakage from the system. They ensure that the hydraulic fluid stays within the cylinders, maintaining system pressure.
Reservoir
The reservoir stores hydraulic fluid and allows the clutch master cylinder to maintain the hydraulic fluid at the proper level for the correct operation of the entire clutch master cylinder.
Basic Principles of Clutch Master Cylinder
Pressing the Clutch Pedal
The driver forces the push rod into the clutch master cylinder when he depresses the clutch pedal. This action creates mechanical pressure that moves the piston in the cylinder.
Creating Hydraulic Pressure
As the piston moves, it forces hydraulic fluid (usually brake fluid) into a series of hydraulic lines, which are connected to the slave cylinder. This transfer of pressure is the key function of the master cylinder.
Pressure Activation of the Slave Cylinder
The hydraulic fluid travels through the lines and into the slave cylinder, which is located near the transmission. The pressure forces the slave cylinder to push on the clutch fork, which then disengages the clutch from the flywheel.
Gear Shifting
The separation of the clutch allows the driver to shift gears smoothly. When the driver releases the pedal, the hydraulic pressure decreases and the clutch reconnects, thus restoring the connection between the engine and the transmission.

Brake fluid is low: The brake fluid should always be at the same level, so if the brake fluid in the reservoir is low, this indicates a leak. Check around the floor, firewall, and master cylinder for fluid.
Clutch is suddenly easier to press: If the clutch feels spongy and easy to press, it means that air is in the system due to a leak, and there isn't enough pressure as a result.
Brake fluid is dark: This happens when the seals are damaged and dirt, debris, or condensation has entered the system, regular clutch fluid flushes as part of your regular servicing will help avoid issues. It does get darker over time, but if it's new and has darkened quickly, get it checked out.
Difficulty changing gears: This points to the clutch not having enough pressure to disengage properly and is a sign that It's about to fail. You'll also hear grinding noises if you try to force gear changes which could cause further damage.
Clutch pedal pushes down but doesn't come back up: This is a sign that the clutch master cylinder has failed, and you'll need to get it repaired or replaced.
