Brake master cylinder leaks are widely considered a "silent killer" among experienced drivers. Unlike clear warnings such as a sudden puncture or engine malfunction light, it is more like a silent countdown; by the time you realise the brakes have failed, it is often too late.

I. Why is brake master cylinders leaking?
To understand the leak, you first need to know what happens inside the master cylinder.
At the heart of the brake master cylinder is a high-precision cylinder containing reciprocating pistons. Pistons and cylinders sealed in rubber cups. Each time you press and release the brake, the piston slides back and forth inside the cylinder hundreds or even thousands of times.
Over time, the Seal faces three major "enemies":
First, aging hardens. Rubber materials will gradually lose its elasticity and become hard and brittle during high temperature and prolonged soaking in brake fluid, greatly reducing sealing performance. For example, if vacuum booster is replaced incorrectly, such as if the pushrod is inserted too deep and the piston is pushed out of the cylinder, or if the pump body is knocked on during removal and assembly, causing needle holes and cracks in the shell,these can be the starting point for brake leaks.

Signal 1: The brake pedal feels "soft," like stepping on cotton.
This is the earliest and most typical symptom of a master cylinder leak.

However, if the inner seal of the master cylinder leaks, some oil can be "stolen" from the seal as the piston creates pressure, causing no increase in system pressure.

Signal 2: brake pedal is getting lower and lower under repeated pressure, requiring several presses to apply brake force.
If you notice that it does little when you first step on the pedal, but after two or three quick steps, the brakes pop up- an indication that something is wrong with the main cylinder's compensating function.
In a normal master cylinder, once the pedal is released, the piston automatically returns to its original position through a rebound and compensation port. At the same time, the compensation port pulls brake fluid from the reservoir back into the working cavity in preparation for the next braking action. However, if the compensation port is blocked by impurities or the piston cup deforms, resulting in insufficient reflux, there is a a "vacuum" in the workroom-the liquid cannot be replenished in time and a a "nothing" situation occurs with the first press.
After a series of compressions, almost no increase in pressure will eventually make the brakes effective, but the process is extremely dangerous as the distance can increase by several metres during these seconds of "repeated compressions."
Signal 3: Oil stains appear on the ground after parking.
This is the most direct physical evidence.
The brake main cylinder is located on the side of the engine compartment firewall. If there is a leak, brake fluid drips from the cylinder body to the ground. Brake fluid is usually a pale yellow or amber color, sticky and markedly different from oil and antifreeze.
If you find an oil stains near the engine compartment firewall or an unknown yellow liquid on the ground where the vehicle is parked, don't hesitate to lie down and check the bottom of the master cylinder for signs of oil seepage.

There are a few things you can do to initially assess its severity and prevent it from getting worse before taking it to the garage. Step 1: Check the reservoir level of brake fluid. Open the hood and locate the brake fluid tank (usually on the driver's side, near the windshield, with a "DOT3" or "DOT4" sign on the cap). See if the liquid level is below the MIN line.
